Respiration Gills external structure used for extracting free oxygen from water walking legs. Respiratory System: Being aquatic organisms, crayfish have gills that aid in respiration. This carapace is aligned backwards from the head, allowing water to run through in a channel over the gills, which provides a continuous source of oxygen that allows the crayfish to breathe. So, as crayfish move the legs, the gills sweep through the water and that increases the contact between the water, and the gills and that increases gas exchange. As a result, organisms like these have to instead take the energy expensive step of rising to the surface to get oxygen. As a result, the gills are required for the crayfish to maintain a healthy acid-base balance, regulate salt levels in its blood, and excrete excess ammonia.
